About Policy Manager
Organizations dealing with vast amounts of data require structured policies to ensure data privacy, security, and compliance. A Policy Manager offers the following advantages:
Standardization: Ensures uniformity in policy definitions across the enterprise.
Compliance: Helps organizations meet regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
Version Control: Maintains a history of policy changes for auditing.
Governance Roles: Defines clear ownership and accountability.
Integration with Data Catalog: Links policies with data assets.
Workflow Automation: Ensures policies are reviewed and approved before publication.
List View
The Policy Manager landing page provides a consolidated view of all policies with key attributes:
Policy Name: The Policy Name column displays all the created policy names.
Status: The Status column displays the policy's current status, such as "Draft" or "Published".

Policy Creation
Policy creation is crucial for establishing and enforcing organizational standards, compliance requirements, and operational guidelines that ensure effective management and oversight. It ensures consistency, accountability, and transparency across systems and processes by defining clear rules and expectations. Through centralized policy creation and management, organizations can efficiently monitor adherence, mitigate risks, and adapt to regulatory changes.
Add New Policy
Go to Administration > System Settings > Users & Roles and search for the key ovaledge.policy.creator. An Admin can add the desired user(s) in the Value field and save to permit them to create policies from the Policy Manager session page.
In OvalEdge Policy Manager, adding a new policy refers to creating a policy directly within the OvalEdge application, where you define the policy’s name, description, applicable data objects, and the rules or conditions to enforce governance internally. For example, you might create a policy that restricts access to personally identifiable information (PII) fields in a specific schema for non-admin users.
On the other hand, adding an external policy involves importing or referencing policies that are defined outside of OvalEdge, such as those from third-party governance tools, cloud platforms, or enterprise policy engines, and making them visible and manageable within OvalEdge. It allows for the integration and enforcement of existing enterprise-wide governance standards. For instance, if your organization already has data access policies defined in AWS Lake Formation or Apache Ranger, you can import those into OvalEdge as external policies for visibility and reference without needing to redefine them.
Follow the steps below to create a new policy:
Click Plus (+) > Add New Policy.
Enter Policy Name and Policy Type. Note: By default, Add New Policy is selected.
Select Governance Roles and click Save.
The policy is created in Draft state and appears in the list view.
Create Using Template
Creating a policy using a template allows users to define a standardized set of rules and configurations for data access, usage, or governance. A policy template serves as a pre-defined structure that includes essential components such as conditions, roles, permissions, and metadata tagging guidelines. Once created, this template can be reused to generate new policies with similar requirements, ensuring consistency and saving time by eliminating the need to recreate rules from scratch. Reusing templates also promotes governance standardization across the organization, making policy enforcement more efficient and reliable.
Follow the steps below to create a policy using a template:
Click Plus (+) > Add New Policy.
Select the "Create Using Template" option and choose a template from the "Choose Template" drop-down list.
Add the Policy Name, Policy Type, and Governance Roles, and click Save.
Importing a Policy
Importing a policy is crucial for ensuring centralized, consistent, and up-to-date policy management across an organization. This feature enables users to link directly to policies hosted on external or internal repositories, ensuring that any updates made to the source are automatically reflected in the application without requiring manual intervention.
External Policy in OvalEdge refers to policies that are created and managed outside the OvalEdge platform in external systems, such as cloud platforms, data governance tools, or regulatory compliance software, and then integrated into OvalEdge for centralized visibility and management. This feature enables organizations to consolidate all their policies, both internal and external, under a single unified framework within OvalEdge. By consolidating policies in a single platform, users can ensure consistency, improve compliance tracking, and streamline governance processes.
Steps Involved
Click Add External Policy.
