About Data Stories

Data Story is the process of transforming data into an understandable storyline for business users and other stakeholders. It’s about communicating insights that deliver real value. The purpose is to create, modify, and organize business knowledge within OvalEdge. This makes all available knowledge neatly documented and available for data discovery and reuse within an organization.

Hierarchy of Data Stories

A Story Zone can organize data stories. Parent stories can have one or more Child Data Stories. To improve and find the correct information, Data Stories can be tagged.

Story Zone and Security

A "Story Zone" is a specific area where data stories are grouped. It provides a logical structure for organizing stories based on their themes, topics, or purposes. Grouping stories into zones makes relevant content easily accessible within the platform.

For example, a Story Zone may hold articles or content exclusive to a specific group and should not be shared with others. In such cases, access to the Story Zone is limited to authorized users, keeping the articles private and inaccessible to unauthorized users.

Super Admin (with the configuration ovaledge.role.admin) automatically becomes Story Zone administrator. They can create new Story Zones and have full permissions over Data Stories. Super Admin can add other users or roles as story zone administrators.

"Access privileges" assign permissions based on roles, determining the actions that can be performed with data stories. Various roles feature distinct access levels, ensuring effective data management, collaboration, and security measures.

Meta Permission Type
Access Privileges

Read Only

  • Can only see the data stories.

  • Cannot add, edit, or tag the data stories.

  • Cannot delete or change the data story's parent, order, or story zone.

Read Write

  • Can add a new data story under that story zone.

  • Can add, edit, and tag the data stories.

  • Can perform all modifications listed under the nine dots on the data stories.

The default super admin role controls story zones. This role can add, edit, or delete Story Zones, assign users and roles, and manage permissions effectively, ensuring the data story’s security.

Rename Story Zones

Story Zone admins can rename Story Zones by clicking on the edit icon in the Story Zone name.

Edit Roles and Users in a Story Zone

  1. Navigate to the OvalEdge application, select Administration > Security > Story Zone, and check the desired story zone checkbox. Then, click the Edit option for authorized roles and users.

  2. An Edit window will appear, where OE_Admin can add or delete User and Role access.

  3. Click Save Permissions. The role of a data story's author is essential in gathering, analyzing, and presenting data in a meaningful way. They use their skills and knowledge to share insights that help decision-making. Authors with read-only or read-write permission have Non-Admin privileges. Author License users can view only the Story Zones they belong to.
