Set up Claude Desktop using Remote OAuth

Scenario

Use this procedure to connect the OvalEdge Remote MCP Server to Claude Desktop via OAuth. After the connection is established, Claude Desktop can securely access OvalEdge MCP tools without manually configuring local MCP server processes or API keys.

  • If Claude Desktop is already signed in, selecting Connect opens the authorization page directly.

  • If Claude Desktop is not signed in, the browser first redirects to the Okta sign-in page. After successful authentication, OAuth authorization continues automatically.

Steps Involved

  1. Open Claude Desktop, click the Profile menu in the lower-left corner, and then select Settings.

  2. In the Settings window, select Connectors from the left navigation pane.

  3. Click the Add dropdown icon in the upper-right corner.

  4. Select Add custom connector.

The Browse connectors option lists pre-built connectors. Select Add custom connector to configure the OvalEdge Remote MCP Server.

  5. In the Add custom connector dialog, enter (Eg: OvalEdge MCP OAuth) as the connector name.

Server URL Remote MCP endpoint format: https://YOUR_PUBLIC_MCP_BASE_URL/mcp

  6. In the Server URL field, enter the Remote MCP endpoint. Click Add.

  7. When the connector is created, a Connection issue message appears because authentication has not yet been completed. Click Connect.

  8. The default web browser opens and prompts to launch Claude Desktop. Optionally select Always allow claude.ai to open links of this type in the associated app, and then click Open Claude.

  9. If Claude Desktop is already authenticated, the OAuth authorization page opens directly.

OR If Claude Desktop is not authenticated, the browser redirects to the Okta sign-in page. Sign in using the organization's Okta credentials to continue the OAuth authentication process.

  10. After authentication completes successfully, the browser automatically returns to Claude Desktop.

  11. Verify that the connector status changes to Connected to OvalEdge MCP OAuth. The connector details display the available OvalEdge MCP tools and their permission settings, confirming that the Remote MCP Server has been configured successfully.
